  1. For those who don’t follow links blindly without more to go on, it’s a terrific post at John’s Open Anthropology Cooperative page analyzing a Japanese romantic comedy that he describes as “a comic parade of social issues often talked about in Japan these days.”

    John, for some reason I’m reminded of a Japanese concept you mentioned once before, of the ‘one-second love affair’ or something like that. Maybe it’s that sense of stumbling into life-changing moments, or not even life-changing but just life-enlivening?

  2. “Life-enlivening moments”! I like that. Reminds me of the American novelist Walker Percy and some of the essays in his non-fiction collection The Message in the Bottle: How Queer Man is, How Queer Language is, and What One Has to Do with the Other. I recall, in particular, one in which he meditates on how great a commuter must feel after surviving a train wreck.
